The Basic Rule: JPG for Photos, PNG for Graphics

You can imagine it like this: if it has the lot of altered colors, gradients and textures, JPEG is the exact format. If it has pointed lines, clearly unconnected areas of flat colors and text, PNG is the right option
What is a JPG?
The JPG image file type, typically prominent jay-peg, was developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) in 1992. The group realized a need to make large photographic files smaller so that they could be more easily shared.
Some quality is compromised when an image is converted to a JPG. The reason is that the compression images is lossy, which means that specific unnecessary information is enduringly deleted. A JPG does, however, allow you to craft minor file size than you could with a PNG.
A JPG has to be used in any circumstance when it’s vital to have a small file. Beyond the initial saving as a JPG, some tools will permit you to shrink the file further. This is helpful for web images, as the lesser size will improve the speed at which the page loads. As broadband internet connections become more widespread, this is becoming less of a concern. However, those with slower (2G) internet connections or older, less powerful computers will thank you for your contemplation.
What is a PNG?
The PNG file format, usually read aloud as ping, was created in the mid-1990’s to act as a substitute for the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). Limitations of the GIF encouraged the creation and prevalence of the PNG.
A unique benefit, and often deciding factor for using a PNG file, is that–unlike a JPG–they shore up transparency. This will let you have a transparent background around an irregular-shaped object and shun a white (or other colored) box outlining your image. If you necessitate transparency, you’ll wish to opt for a PNG.
File compression for a PNG is lossless. As the word itself indicate, lossless compression hangs on to all of the data contained in the file, within the file, during the process. Lossless compression is necessary when you have images that are still in the editing process. PNGs are often used if size is not a concern and the picture is complicated because a PNG file holds additional information than a JPG.
So, which should you use?
If you’re uploading vacation pictures to Facebook, JPG is the winner. Do you want to make a short, hilarious animation from your favorite movie scene? If you’re going to be using high-quality images, detailed icons or need to preserve transparency, PNG is the winner.
